The time finally came to welcome our students to Hanyang University ERICA Campus. There were a total of 58 international students arriving for Autumn 2024. Orientation took place on August 30, 2024, at the HYU ERICA Campus Conference Hall. Our General Administrative Specialist May Ann welcomed in the new students, and recounted the days events. Getting started
On the way to the campus, I met a few of our students at the subway station. Paula and Vanessa from Germany, and Iona from France. As a general administrative specialists and coordinator, it is essential for me to understand how public transportation works. There’s nothing more rewarding than experiencing it for myself. This allows me to better relate to the students’ experiences, and offer more tailored insights.
The orientation event began with a welcome speech by Dr. Bongyoung Yoo, the Vice President of the Office of International Affairs. He highlighted the diversity of international students this semester, asking those from different parts of Europe to raise their hands. The conference hall, a large venue, was filled with students, the majority of whom were from Asia Exchange.
Following Dr. Yoo’s welcome, the information session commenced. It covered important topics for the semester such as applying for the foreign residence card, securing part-time work, insurance and exemption policies, and more.
As the session progressed, Mr. Lee Ye-Hoon from Global E&S, one of our valued partners, presented an opportunity for students to intern in South Korea. Additionally, the Human Rights Center at Hanyang University ERICA was introduced as a resource for students seeking support.
Between each info session, there were raffles. There the students could win HYU merchandise, such as wireless chargers, tumblers, bags, and a limited-edition jacket. The session was highly interactive, with students clapping and cheering for the winners.
After party
After a few more presentations, we wrapped up the orientation. From there we started heading to the Global Lounge at the Student Welfare Building for a pizza party. Every semester, Hanyang University ERICA hosts a pizza party as part of orientation. The menu was carefully curated based on students’ preferences and diets, which are collected through a pre-orientation survey.
Following the pizza party, I finally had the opportunity to meet the Asia Exchange students in person after months of virtual meetings and communication. I also took the chance to introduce the Ambassador Program, encouraging them to share their study abroad experiences and inspire future international students.
This entire experience will forever be a core memory for me as an international coordinator. I am incredibly grateful to Asia Exchange for giving me the opportunity to meet the students from around the world and immerse myself in South Korean culture. I leave this orientation days’ events with valuable lessons and experiences to share with future students.
