Semester Abroad Courses at Temple University Japan

TUJ offers a flexible study abroad experience that allows students to immerse themselves in Japanese culture while earning academic credits toward their home degree.
Students typically take four to five courses per semester, and in most cases, credits can be transferred back to their home university. Course preferences are submitted as part of the application process, with final course confirmation taking place upon arrival in Tokyo or Kyoto.
TUJ offers a wide range of courses taught entirely in English, making it easy for international students to study abroad in Japan without needing prior Japanese language skills. Credits at Temple University Japan
Japanese university credits are generally based on an estimated workload of about 45 hours per credit, which is comparable to the credit systems used in the United States. This workload includes both in-class instruction and independent study time. A typical full-time semester course load ranges from 12 to 18 credits, which corresponds to approximately 20 to 30 ECTS credits.
Example conversions (1 credit = about 1.667 ECTS):

- Good GPA requirement (on average students get accepted with a GPA of 3.34).

- After acceptance: Passport copy, photo, financial documentation, COE materials for the student visa (submitted to TUJ).

- All attachments must be sent to us by the application deadline at the very latest, preferably as soon as possible.
- You can submit all the documents electronically. Please don’t send anything via regular mail.
- There is a late application fee for applications or attachments submitted after the application deadline.
Confirmation, official acceptance letter and visa
You’ll get a confirmation of your study placement in 1-7 days, starting from when your application is complete with all the required documents. You’ll receive the electronic official acceptance letter approximately 1,5 months before the semester starts. You need to print the official acceptance letter for your student visa application.
Fees
The application fee invoice will be sent to you soon after the initial acceptance letter. This fee will be due within 10 days of receiving your confirmation. The application fee is non-refundable even if you decide to cancel (see below). You’ll receive the invoice for the tuition fee about 2.5 months before the semester starts.
Cancellation
If you’re unable to participate in the study abroad semester, you have the right to cancel your participation up to 1 month before the semester starts with no extra cost (the application fee will not be refunded, however). Let us know about your cancellation by writing us an email at info[at]asiaexchange.org. Cancellations notified via phone, SMS or by any other means will not be considered. Travel insurance

Q: How do I select my courses?

Visa & Travel
Q: When and how can I apply for my visa?
A: You can apply for your student visa after you receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from Temple University Japan. TUJ will apply for the COE on your behalf once you submit all required documents and are accepted. When the COE is issued, you’ll take it to the Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country to apply for your visa. The visa process usually takes a few days to a couple of weeks. Q: Is there on-campus accommodation available at Temple University Japan?
A: Temple University Japan does not have traditional on-campus dormitories, but it works with partner housing providers that offer student residences and apartments near campus. Read more here.
Q: When do I know if I will receive a dormitory room?
A: Housing availability depends on the provider, but TUJ students are usually receiving a guaranteed accommodation. You are usually informed after you apply for housing and once availability is confirmed, often a few months before the semester starts.
Q: When can I move into the dormitory, and how long can I stay there?
A: Move-in dates are set by the housing provider and usually begin shortly before the semester starts. Length of stay varies by contract, typically one semester to one academic year.
Q: How can I find suitable accommodation options?
A: TUJ provides housing guidance and referrals to partner companies, and students can also search independently using real estate agencies or student housing websites in Tokyo.
Health & Safety
Q: Which vaccinations do I need to take?
A: Japan does not require specific vaccinations for entry, but students are advised to be up to date on routine immunizations and any vaccinations recommended by their home country or doctor.
Q: Can I bring prescription medicines to Japan?
A: Yes, but some medications are restricted or prohibited in Japan. You should check Japanese regulations in advance and may need to apply for a Yakkan Shōmei (import certificate) for certain prescription medicines.
Q: Do I need to have travel insurance?

Gap Year at Temple University Japan
A gap year at Temple University Japan Campus (TUJ) is an excellent option for recent high-school graduates who want to spend one or two semesters in Japan before starting university. TUJ offers a flexible experience that allows students to immerse themselves in Japanese culture while earning academic credits that may be useful further down the line.
Students typically take four to five courses per semester at bachelor’s level, with course preferences submitted as part of the application process and final confirmation taking place upon arrival in Tokyo or Kyoto.
TUJ offers a wide range of courses taught entirely in English, making it easy to study in Japan without needing prior Japanese language skills. Available subjects include International Business, Art, Political Science, and many others. Many students also choose to complement their studies with a Japanese language course or Japanese Studies classes such as Japanese Culture, Introduction to East Asia: Japan, Japanese Art, and Japan Today.

Master’s Degree at TUJ – Master in Management (MiM)
The Master in Management (MiM) in Tokyo is a one-year program created for recent graduates who want to build a solid understanding of business, regardless of their academic background. The curriculum introduces key business disciplines such as management, financial and accounting fundamentals, data-driven decision-making, and ethical leadership.
Based in Tokyo, the program also emphasizes practical learning, giving students dedicated time at the end of their studies to pursue an internship and gain hands-on experience in an international business setting. The program starts once per year in August and consists of three terms.

Q: When and how can I apply for my visa?
A: You can apply for your student visa after you receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from Temple University Japan. TUJ will apply for the COE on your behalf once you submit all required documents and are accepted. When the COE is issued, you’ll take it to the Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country to apply for your visa. The visa process usually takes a few days to a couple of weeks. Health & Safety
Q: Which vaccinations do I need to take?
A: Japan does not require specific vaccinations for entry, but students are advised to be up to date on routine immunizations and any vaccinations recommended by their home country or doctor.
Q: Can I bring prescription medicines to Japan?
A: Yes, but some medications are restricted or prohibited in Japan. You should check Japanese regulations in advance and may need to apply for a Yakkan Shōmei (import certificate) for certain prescription medicines.
Q: Do I need to have travel insurance?
