Student Visa for International Students
Most international students study in Costa Rica on a tourist visa, which is automatically issued upon entry for most nationalities – no prior application required. A valid passport and proof of onward travel (a return or open-ended ticket) are required to enter.
To maintain legal status beyond 90 days, students have two options:
- Border run: A brief exit at a land border (Panama or Nicaragua) resets the 90-day tourist visa
- Student visa: Apply through your university’s immigration support. This suspends the 90-day expiry while the application is processed, which typically takes over 6 months. This is the standard route for longer exchanges.
