Applying for a Student Visa in Japan
If you are planning to study abroad in Japan, applying for a student visa Japan is an important part of the process. This visa allows you to live and study in Japan legally during your academic program and is required for most university studies lasting longer than a short-term stay.
After you receive acceptance from a partner university, the school will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility on your behalf. This document is issued by Japanese immigration authorities and confirms that you meet the requirements for a student visa Japan. Once the certificate is ready, you submit it together with your visa application at a Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country.
Asia Exchange guides you through each step with clear instructions, timelines, and document support. This makes the student visa Japan process as smooth as possible, so you can focus on preparing for your studies and your life in Japan.
Japan has reciprocal visa exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions. Refer to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website for information about visa exemptions.

To study in person at Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ), most international students need to apply for a student visa with TUJ’s support. TUJ handles the paperwork you cannot do on your own by submitting a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) application to the Japanese Immigration Bureau on your behalf once you’re admitted. You then use the COE to apply for your actual visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country.
How it works:
1. Submit your visa documents to TUJ
After admission, you upload the required forms and materials (such as your passport copy, ID photo, and proof of financial support) by the visa application deadline. TUJ will compile these and send the COE request to immigration.2. Waiting for the COE
The Japanese Immigration Bureau usually takes about 6 to 8 weeks to review the application and issue the COE.3. Apply for your visa at home
Once TUJ sends you the COE, you take it to your local Japanese embassy or consulate with your passport and visa application form. Requirements and processing times vary by location, but most visas are issued within a few days to a week. -
