Exchange student Nick shares his thoughts on studying in Bali
Warmadewa University is ranked among the best universities in Indonesia. Students from all over the world come to study at the university, which has a large, modern campus and several schools. Our social media coordinator, Fabian, sat down with the exchange student Nick Van Calck from Belgium, to hear his thoughts about student life in Bali.

Hello Nick! Tell me a little bit about yourself.
So my name is Nick Van Calck and I’m 21 years old. I study international trade back home in Belgium and after this semester I’m planning to do another exchange semester but in Zaragoza, Spain. The reason for it is to learn Spanish. I can speak French, Deutch and English, so I want to learn a fourthlanguage.
Why did you choose to study in Bali?
First of all, I wanted to study one semester in Australia. But I changed my mind. Don´t get me wrong, Australia seems to be nice but the tuition fees are way too expensive. I rather save that money and travel. My second destination was Bali. I have always wanted to explore this island and I have done a bit of traveling before but until now, I have never been to Asia. I was in Hawaii a couple of years ago so I thought Bali would be kind of the same. You know, gorgeous beaches, jungle… I was pretty sure I was going to love Bali.

How did you get to know about Warmadewa University?
Just through my University. I ended up in Warmadewa and I’m happy to be here. We are only 50 students so it’s been easy to get to know everybody. I´m happy I ended up studying at Warmadewa University. The location of the school is perfect. I get to see the capital and the campus is also close to the popular areas like Seminyak and Canggu.
What is your impression of the university?
It has a good infrastructure and the buildings are modern. There is a mix of both international and local students. Like when we sit and eat in the cafeteria, there are always local students around you. It is easy to start a conversation with them because they are very interested in us.
What are your favorite courses?
Well, International business and strategic management are my two favorite courses because they are close to what I study at home.
Can you credit all your courses?
Yes, I have 6 courses, which give me 30 ECTS. I can credit them all.
What is a regular day in Bali?
Every day I wake up around 6.30am. I usually start my day by exercising. If I don’t do anything I feel lazy! I have started with cross fit, which is something I haven’t done before. The gym is an awesome place to get to know new people with different backgrounds. I usually have school until 2 pm. After University or the days when I´m off school, I just hang out with my friends. It’s common that we use our days to explore new beaches, surf or see waterfalls.
Why did you choose to live in the Kerobokan area?
I think it´s well located in the busiest areas like Seminyak and Canggu. That’s where the best vibes are! In those areas, there are many affordable restaurants, good parties like Old’s man, Jungle, Sand Bar… You just need to drive 10 minutes from where I live to go to cool places. In the beginning, I thought I was gonna move around, you know, to try different areas but I´m happy to live here. To live on a daily basis, Kerobokan is ideal.

How is the student life in Bali?
It’s pretty nice because Bali is full of young people. You can hang out with students, travelers or locals. People who travel are usually here to just have fun so it’s easy to find open-minded people to hang out with. In one night you can meet so many different people. Also, it’s really cheap to live in Bali. That is a great benefit if you are a student who is looking for cheap options where you can live with a low budget.
What have you done so far?
I’ve been all around Bali, seen all the well-known places. I try to constantly find new locations where people don’t travel. I’ve also been to other islands like Lombok. I went trekking for three days in order to reach the top of the Rinjani volcano. It was one of my favorite experiences! I love to wake up early and just use the day to explore new things.
Who would you recommend to study in Bali?
A person who likes to travel, loves warm weather and wants to meet new people, come to Bali! An exchange semester here is a good opportunity to spend four months in paradise! Be prepared to learn a lot about yourself. This experience will test you in many different ways. You will get out of your comfort zone which is only beneficial for your own personal development.
